On August 5, 2017, Robert Thomas Groves of Columbia, MD, beloved husband of Annemarie Groves for 59 years passed away. Loving father of Kenneth Groves and wife Marybeth, Thomas Groves and wife Pamela, Susan Rodgers and husband Jeffrey, and Michael Groves and wife Kelly. Survived by brother Richard Groves and wife Rita. Grandfather of Amanda Groves, Kevin Groves, Kate Groves, Joseph Groves, Sophia Groves, Lindsey Rodgers, Jake Rodgers, Emily Groves and Matthew Groves.
Bob was born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts. After graduating from Northeastern University in 1953, Bob started a career in the federal government, which moved him down to the Maryland area, After working for the Naval Ordnance Laboratory for several years, Bob began his 32+ year career with NASA, Goddard Space Flight Center. Bob loved his work at NASA, where he ultimately headed the Flight Dynamics Division and over his career was involved in such projects as the first moon missions with astronauts (Project Apollo), satellite operations in orbit, and supporting space shuttle missions. As his wife Annemarie would always say, he went to work happy every day!
After retiring from NASA in 1994, Bob enjoyed a very full retirement of playing golf with Annemarie at Turf Valley Country Club for over 20 years, spending time enjoying his family and grandkids, and taking Annemarie out on lunch dates everyday. Bob's golf claim to fame was that he had six holes in one over his lifetime, with four of them at Turf Valley and two being in same hole. The last two holes in one were on Veteran's Day in 2012 and July 4th, 2013.
Bob was a kind, gentle man with a heart of gold, a great sense of humor and his wife and family were the most important things to him in the world.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Rd,. Columbia, MD 20145 on Saturday, August 12th, 2017, from 2 to 4 pm.
